Promoting Human Dignity based on the recognition the Man is made
in the Image and Likeness of God

Editorial

After increasing national pressure and a stream of devastating revelations, the workings of Liverpool Care Pathway, the controversial framework used to accelerate the death of terminally ill patients, finally appears to be receiving the scrutiny it deserves from the UK Department of Health.

The Health Minister Norman Lamb has summoned a special meeting of doctors to address concerns, in addition to the current probe led by the Association of Palliative Medicine.  These measures follow the significant announcement of reinforced safeguards to the NHS Constitution unveiled by the Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt, giving the families of patient's better protection and influence over the treatment of their relatives and making it a legal requirement for Doctors to first gain family consent before initiating LCP.

While the full details are yet to emerge, the Dignitatis Humanae Institute cautiously welcomes the apparent determination of the new Health Secretary to root out such malpractice within British healthcare.

Jim Dobbin MP, Vice-Chairman of the British Parliament's Cross-Party Working Group on Human Dignity, was one of the first to call for an investigation.  Speaking to Imago Dei, Mr. Dobbin spoke of his hopes for further scrutiny:

"The tightening of the conditions on LCP and the Department for Health's willingness to act are to be welcomed.  Nevertheless, there are still many concerning issues left unresolved. The questionable procedure of dehydration, withdrawal of food and the recent surge of patients placed on LCP all warrant a more comprehensive examination.  An inquiry led by the Department would go some way as to addressing these remaining concerns."

Forthcoming Event

 'Support For Families'

Sejm (Parliament), Warsaw, Poland

On 24 November 2012, The European Christian Political Foundation and Solidarna Polska will be holding a conference to explore ways in which government policy can better support families.  The addresses will focus on the modern pressures on the family, child benefit systems and the balance of work and family life.

Speaking ahead of the conference, Leo van Doesburg, of the European Christian Political Movement, told Imago Dei:

"The terrible economic situation has put great strain on all families.  In these difficult times it is of paramount importance that governments recognise that strong, stable and loving families are the core of our society.  This conference will look at potential ways the government can better support our families."

Full details of the event can be found here

"The Institute promotes recognition of the infinite value of every single person by recognising each human life as being made in the Image and Likeness of God, from conception until natural death. The Imago Dei is the source of the sanctity of human life. Promoting Human Dignity protects this sanctity in the political sphere, as the Christian Faith upholds it in the cultural sphere. The Institute exists to draw these themes together."

Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor - Human Dignity within the Prison system

In the annual 'Sir Harold Hood Memorial' Lecture, His Eminence Cormac Cardinal Murphy-O'Connor, member of the Dignitatis Humanae Institute Advisory Board, spoke of the need for a clear link between social policy and the criminal justice system.

In addition, His Eminence highlighted the Church's teaching of the importance of recognising the human dignity of those in prison, and their need for spiritual support during that time.

Speaking to the Dignitatis Humanae Institute, Cardinal Murphy-O'Connor outlined his emphasis:

"It is vitally important to the effectiveness of prison that we not only recognise but actively promote the dignity of the human being.  In respecting the dignity of the offendent, we offer them a prospect for reform; in that way, their sentence is not merely restricted to a type of punishment but instead a life-changing opportunity."
