On 29 June 2012, the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, the Dignitatis Humanae Institute will celebrate the official launch of our International Office in Rome, with our inaugural conference entitled 'The Role of Christians in the Public Square.'

The featured speakers - including President Rocco Buttiglione,
Anna Záborská MEP and Gay Mitchell MEP - will
examine
the paramount importance of human dignity, its concept and the role of the Universal Declaration of Human Dignity.  Furthermore, there will be an emphasis on the experiences of Christians in the public sphere and the role of faith in politics.

The conference shall be followed by an evening reception to officially launch our Rome office.  The purpose of this office is to better provide structural support for the affiliated Parliamentary Working Groups on Human Dignity, with another working group due to be launched in the Italian Parliament next month.

Registration for the day's events can still be made HERE.  The Institute looks forward to greeting our associates and friends from across the globe to the Eternal City.

Speaking to Imago Dei ahead of his visit to Rome to attend 'The Role of Christians in the Public Square', Nirj Deva MEP, President of the International Committee on Human Dignity, congratulated the Dignitatis Humanae Institute:

"The Christian faith has contributed 2,000 years of scholarship and service to society, its values and traditions form the foundation of our democratic civilisation.  It is these Christian values which underpin our human rights. It is our equality before God that empowers us to be equal to one another and thus equal before the law.

The secular move to silence and exclude Christians from the public square is an attack upon equality and must be resisted. This conference, coupled with the efforts of the Dignitatis Humanae Institute, will demonstrate the wonderful work Christians across the globe make in public life."

"The Institute promotes recognition of the infinite value of every single person by recognising each human life as being made in the Image and Likeness of God, from conception until natural death. The Imago Dei is the source of the sanctity of human life. Promoting human dignity protects this sanctity in the political sphere, as the Christian Faith upholds it in the cultural sphere. The Institute exists to draw these themes together."

What they say about the DHI…

  • [Speaking of the need for the DHI] “We believe it is the responsibility of every person to promote human dignity, as human dignity is a gift from God, who gave it to us by creating us in His image and likeness. We must thank God for this gift, and we pray that everyone in the world respects the human person, his dignity, and consequently his human rights. In fact having the infinite value of every single person, without exception, recognized by everybody must be our common fervent prayer.” Cardinal Renato Martino
