The Monthly Newsletter of the Dignitatis Humanae Institute
Volume 2, Issue 11

[We have had a number of complaints that people were unable to open the newsletter we sent out earlier, so we are sending it again in a ready-to-view format, which we shall use instead from now on. We are very sorry if this created an earlier nuisance.]

Imago Dei

Editorial

Welcome to the first edition of Imago Dei in fifteen months. In that time, the Dignitatis Humanae Institute has overseen the setting up of a new office in Rome, complete with a new team. I should like to thank the former editor of Imago Dei, Ingrid Grosu, for her dedicated assistance in
re-establishing this newsletter.

Recent months have revealed a British government of two personalities: on one side we have a government that values the role of faith in the community, and sees the family as the core of society. The latest demonstration of this came from Conservative Party chairman Baroness Warsi who, during a visit to the Holy See in February, highlighted Christianity's historic contribution to the UK.

And yet, the British government's actions reveal a stark contrast: a government that has recently voted down attempts to provide better counselling for pregnant women considering abortion; a government that is failing to act against the 'baby-steps' towards legalised euthanasia; and a government that would seek to deny Christians from wearing a symbol of faith at work.

We hope the present court case regarding the right to wear a crucifix at work is brought to a positive conclusion. On this issue, Imago Dei welcomes the personal stance of the Prime Minister who is to be congratulated, encouraged and wholeheartedly supported for the line in the sand he has drawn against militant secularism. The coalition government he leads would do well to follow his example.

Campaigns

40 Days For Life

A community-based campaign seeking to draw attention to the consequences of abortion through peaceful vigils.

Speaking to Imago Dei, Robert Colquhoun, Campaign Manager for the London 40 Days For Life stated: "We are now conducting our fourth 40 Days For Life campaign here in London, along with Birmingham, Manchester and Brighton this Lent.  We conduct a peaceful, prayerful and legal prayer vigil outside an abortion clinic in central London every day for 40 days.

Since our campaign started, more than thirty women have chosen life for their babies in the United Kingdom, and these are just the ones we know about!"

Reflection

"The patience to bear those offenses addressed to us is virtue; but to remain impassable before those which are addressed to God is the epitome of impiety."

- St. John Chrysostom

"The Institute promotes recognition of the infinite value of every single person by recognising each human life as being made in the Image and Likeness of God, from conception until natural death. The Imago Dei is the source of the sanctity of human life. Promoting Human Dignity protects this sanctity in the political sphere, as the Christian Faith upholds it in the cultural sphere. The Institute exists to draw these themes together."

Forthcoming Events

Conference on Gendercide

To mark International Women's Day, Gay Mitchell MEP, President of the European Parliament's Working Group on Human Dignity, is hosting a conference on 19 March concerning the practice of gendercide globally.  The speakers include Andris Piebalgs, European Commissioner for development, and Xinran Xue, the British-Chinese journalist and writer.

Gay Mitchell MEP told Imago Dei: "This conference is very important. As far as we are aware, it is the first meeting that has ever been held in the European Parliament specifically on gendercide, although the Working Group on Human Dignity did hold a meeting dealing with the subject a couple of years ago in the wider context of forced abortion in China. I strongly urge people to come and hear the arguments.  It's important to have a view on this, one way or the other."

Revealing report on funding of abortion in EU's development aid

On 27 March, European Dignity Watch will launch its exposing report into EU abortion funding at an event held in the European
Parliament entitled Sexual and Reproductive Health
and Rights In Developing Countries.

Speaking to Imago Dei, Sophia Kuby, Exective Director of European Dignity Watch said: "We have clear evidence that the EU is pumping millions of Euros into organizations whose core mission is to increase safe and legal abortions worldwide - while mothers and children around the world die because of dirty water and lack of obstetric care.  The Commission must exercise more scrutiny in the allocation of their funds!  Our report is a first step to raise awareness about this misuse of taxpayer's money."
